How long do GoCardless payouts take?

On GoCardless's published UK timings, a direct debit from a customer with an active mandate is charged three business days after you create it, and the money reaches your bank about two business days later, so roughly five business days end to end. A new customer adds a day while the mandate is set up. The payout arrives as one lump sum with GoCardless's fees already taken off.

The short version

  • GoCardless takes about five business days from creating a payment to money in your bank.
  • A new customer adds a day while the mandate is set up.
  • Payouts arrive as one lump sum with GoCardless's fees already deducted.
  • Refunds, chargebacks and late failures come off later payouts, and failed payments still carry a fee.
  • Adfin pays out every weekday in full, charges nothing for failed payments and chases unpaid invoices.

GoCardless payout timings step by step

GoCardless counts from the day you create the payment, and the figures below come from its own Bacs (UK) payment timings page.

GoCardless says funds typically reach your bank between 2pm and 5pm on the payout day. So if you create a payment for an existing customer on a Monday afternoon, before the cut-off and with no bank holiday in the way, you can expect the money the following Monday afternoon.

A few rules shift those dates. A payment created at the weekend or on a bank holiday starts processing on the next working day, and so does one created after the 4pm cut-off. If you set a charge date in advance, GoCardless submits the payment two working days before it, so your customer is charged on the date you chose and the payout follows about two business days later.

How often you're paid also depends on your account. GoCardless groups the payments paid out on a given day into one lump sum. It offers daily, weekly and monthly payout schedules, but says the ability to choose a schedule is only available to a small number of merchants. Your account has to be fully verified before you receive any payout, so it's worth finishing verification before your first collection date rather than alongside it.

Why a payout can arrive later or smaller than expected

Most surprises come from what's taken out of a payout rather than from the payout running late.

GoCardless deducts its transaction fees before paying you. It also charges its fee on every payment you submit, including ones that fail, so a collection that bounces still costs you the fee.

Refunds, chargebacks and late failures come off your payouts too. A late failure is a collection that was marked as confirmed but turned out not to have been paid. If one of these happens after the original payment was paid out to you, GoCardless takes it from a later payout. If it happens before the payout is made, the payment and the deduction can cancel each other out, and the payout for that day can be zero.

So a payout that seems late is often one that's been reduced, or one that covers a different set of payments from the ones you were expecting. The payout reference on your bank statement, in GoCardless's notification email and on the payouts page of your dashboard is the way into the detail: each payout lists the payments collected and anything deducted.

Bank holidays add time as well. Bacs doesn't process on them, so a collection or a payout that would fall on one moves to the next working day.

What a provider that pays out in full changes

The Bacs part of the timetable is the same for every provider: your customer is charged on the collection date, and nobody can make that faster. What differs is what happens to the money afterwards.

Adfin pays out every weekday, and direct debits reach you within three working days of the collection date. Each payout arrives at the full amount your customers paid, with the fee sent as a separate invoice, so there's no fee to split out before the payout matches your invoices. There's no charge for a failed payment either. A failed direct debit is retried for free and, if it still doesn't go through, the customer's card can be charged or they're asked to pay another way.

GoCardless collects payments but doesn't chase customers who haven't paid or haven't set up a mandate. Adfin's customer agents chase unpaid invoices over email, SMS and WhatsApp on the schedule you set, from your own email domain.

If you move from GoCardless with 10 or more mandates, your customers don't need to sign anything again: the mandates move across through the Bacs bulk change process and collections carry on. With fewer than that, each customer signs a fresh mandate.

Common questions

How long does a GoCardless payout take in the UK? About five business days from creating a payment to the money reaching your bank, for a customer with an active mandate, and about six for a new customer.

What time of day do GoCardless payouts arrive? GoCardless says funds typically reach your bank between 2pm and 5pm on the payout day.

What is the GoCardless cut-off for creating a payment? 4pm. A payment created after that, or at a weekend or on a bank holiday, starts processing on the next working day.

Does GoCardless pay out daily? GoCardless groups each day's paid-out payments into one lump sum and offers daily, weekly or monthly schedules, but says choosing a schedule is only available to a small number of merchants.

Why is my GoCardless payout smaller than expected? GoCardless deducts its fees before paying you, and refunds, chargebacks and late failures come off later payouts.

Can I move from GoCardless without my customers re-signing? Yes. With 10 or more mandates, Adfin moves them through the Bacs bulk change process and customers don't sign anything. With fewer than 10, they sign a new Adfin mandate.
